Lib Dems Launch Petition Against Heathrow Expansion12.00.00am GMT Fri 16th Feb 2007
Hundreds of signatures have already been collected by Ealing Lib Dems on a petition against expansion at Heathrow, which can also be signed on-line. Launched in central Acton, the petition is part of a campaign to stop the Labour Government's plans to build a third runway and a 6th terminal. The plans mean more people in the borough will be affected by overflying, at night as well as in the day, as new flight paths move over Acton and Chiswick. Both noise and air pollution are set to increase. Aviation is the fastest growing source of carbon dioxide in the UK and CO2 emissions from Heathrow flights will rise by a further 40% if the runway is built. Ealing Lib Dem member, Doreen James, said: "Giving the green light to Heathrow expansion exposes the Government's shallow commitment to tackling climate change. Heathrow airport is also already in breach of EU limits for nitrogen dioxide pollution. A new runway will be an environmental disaster for local people in Ealing in terms of increased pollution, noise and surface traffic."
