Liberal Democrats criticise Labour for giving up the ghost on our libraries

At the Overview & Scrutiny meeting tonight, which was prompted by a Lib Dem call-in about libraries, Labour-run Ealing has allowed five libraries run by voluntary groups without any assessment of the business cases about how the community run libraries might operate.

Lib Dem Councillor Jon Ball voted for the plan to be sent back to Cabinet to be reconsidered.

Liberal Democrat Leader Councillor Gary Malcolm said: “Liberal Democrats say Labour should listen to the 64% of people who said they do not want community managed libraries. Without any guarantees it is likely that some or all of these libraries will shut as the relatively few business cases have not been fully assessed to be feasible. Other neighboring Councils like Hounslow and Hillingdon have managed to save their libraries. Why not Ealing? Liberal Democrats would ensure that all libraries would be managed by the Council.”
