Liberal Democrats win vote on reinstating free travel for under 18s

Following news that free travel for under 18s will stop after a deal done by Transport for London and the Government, Ealing Liberal Democrats put forward a motion last night to gain support for keeping free travel for the under 18s.

By supporting the Liberal Democrat motion,  local Labour and Conservative parties have both disagreed with their national parties – about taking away free travel away from under 18s, which has been shown to be cost effective, promotes social inclusion and reduces road collisions.

Ealing Liberal Democrat Leader Councillor Gary Malcolm said: “I am pleased that the Labour and Tory councillors are backing the Liberal Democrat campaign to save under 18s travel. The Tory government and Labour’s London Mayor plans are plain unjust and will be a disaster for the capital’s poorest families.”

Siobhan Benita, the Liberal Democrat London Mayoral candidate, said: “Young Londoners will be returning to school next week and many of them rely on free travel to get there. Taking away this concession was always unjust but without special arrangements in place for those most in need, the most sensible thing to do at this stage is to reverse the decision urgently.”
