Ealing Liberal Democrats blame Labour for Broadway Living going bust
Councillor Gary Malcolm spoke at Ealing Council's Cabinet meeting on Wednesday, 10th June 2026 about Broadway Living going bust.
Liberal Democrats say that Ealing's Labour Council's attempt to play at being a property developer has finally failed with Broadway Living going bust.
Closing the company down will cost council taxpayers nearly £40m, funded by borrowing. This will leave the council overall £6.5m worse off when the value of the homes is taken into account, but before the additional costs of managing and finishing the stalled projects have been included.
It has been clear for years that Broadway Living was not sustainable. At public scrutiny of the company in 2023, officers admitted that its business model was unviable and a review a year ago recommended closing it down. Labour cynically waited until after the local elections to reveal this.
By this year, Ealing Council has only delivered 180 homes of the 1,138 it promised the GLA. Broadway Living spent £71m to build these, not even making a dent on the housing waiting lists.
Councillor Jon Ball, Liberal Democrats Shadow Cabinet Spokesperson for Planning, Licensing & Regeneration said: “Ealing Labour should have grasped the nettle and closed down this failed experiment years ago. Allowing it to limp on has increased the cost to council taxpayers. The sites at Deans Gardens and around the borough still lie empty and will cost the council more of our money to demolish before new schemes for those sites can start.”
