Acton Police Station is the only police station open in Ealing borough!

The Metropolitan Police announced that police front counters open 24/7 will be reduced from 37 to 19 with just 8 remaining across the whole of London. Shockingly this was announced over the last few days with no consultation or notice!

This follows on from the current London Mayor’s decision in 2017 to close 38 of 73 police stations with nearly all boroughs left with only one counter open 24 hours.

Acton Police station remains the only open police station in the borough after the closure of Ealing and Chiswick police stations a few years ago!

It is now expected that Twickenham and Merton will lose their counters in South-West London! This means Acton Police Station will now likely be additionally addressing crimes coming in from Richmond Borough. This could be an increase between 20% and a 100% for Acton Police station’s workload 1.

It breaks Scotland Yard’s pledge to have one front counter accessible 24 hours a day in each of the capital’s 32 boroughs.

Councillor Connie Hersch - Crime, Anti-Social Behaviour, Communities and Culture Spokesperson said: “Liberal Democrats believe that the closure of more Police stations will undermine the intent of the Met police to build trusted relationships with people. Given the increase in crime and antisocial behaviour especially around our train and tube transport hubs, the decision to axe half of London's police counters will come as a massive shock to many Londoners. It does send the wrong message and is yet more evidence that the Labour Mayor of London is failing its residents by not making the case to the Labour Government for the funding needed to keep London and Londoners safe.”

Councillor Gary Malcolm - Leader of the Opposition added: “This is yet another sign that London’s policing is struggling as crime rises, both locally and across the capital. With the police less visible and accessible to the public, local residents will rightly be worried about their safety and the ability to report crime easily. Acton police station will be one of only eight 24/7 police stations across London is truly shocking! The Labour Government must urgently commit to funding the Metropolitan Police properly to rebuild community policing across London before it’s too late.”
