Cllr Zissimos drives forward more safety measures on Mason Green Lane for users
Ealing Liberal Democrat Councillor Athena Zissimos (Hanger Hill) has been encouraging Ealing Council to take seriously the dangers in Mason Green Lane, a shared path for pedestrians and cyclists alike. The pathway has become more dangerous with the increased usage of e-bikes.
Masons Green Lane runs from Park Royal Tube Station past Holy Family Catholic Primary School. The pathway has prompted increasing concern, particularly as the school gates open directly onto it. Parent association and local resident association on Masons Green Lane are concerned regarding potential injury and collision of cyclists, e-bikes and pedestrians, especially school children.
Councillor Athena Zissimos' efforts at bringing together many interested parties has paid off. The following changes have been implemented to improve safety of the pathway.
- Large painted marking on the path with three new “SLOW” and two new “SLOW AHEAD SCHOOL” to provide substantial visible warnings.
- Implementation of new thermoplastic rumble strips (seven sets with a max height of 6mm) on the trackway. These act as vertical slowing features to encourage cyclists to slow down whilst retaining ability of those cycling and wheeling to use the path.
- Also, better signage on lampposts to advise all users of the school location.
- Finally improving visibility of existing signage, through vegetation cutback.
Councillor Athena Zissimos, Shadow Environment Spokesperson, said: “I have seen cyclists go full speed past the school gates without slowing down, apparently unaware of the school. Liberal Democrats are pleased that these new safety measures have been implemented, after much encouragement to make the pathway safer for all users. Ealing Liberal Democrats are listening and acting on local concerns and improving the local environment for residents.”
