Liberal Democrat Councillor Athena Zissimos (Hanger Hill ward)
has been actively raising concerns about her local area and the dishevelled state of the subway which runs under the A40 outside Park Royal Tube Station in her Hanger Hill constituency, along with fellow Hanger Hill Councillors Jonathan Oxley and Mark Sanders

She has been instigating discussions with the Old Oak and Park Royal Development Corporation (OPDC) to work to upgrade the subway which passes under the A40 and connects two halves of Masons Green Lane. There has been ongoing work in August and September 2026 to refresh the subway itself to make it more attractive, improve signage, upgrade the CCTV in the area and improve lighting.

Residents often use this subway to cross the road for the bus stop or to reach Park Royal Tube Station depending on where you are starting from, and children use it to go to school at the Holy Family School at the end of Masons Green Lane in West Acton. It is part of “cash strapped” Transport for London's (TfL) responsibility. Ealing borough contributes to its upkeep by sweeping the subway two or three times a year. It is the Park Plaza Hotel nearby who contribute to cleaning the subway more regularly as a service to residents and guests alike. A key local business contributing to making the environment better for everyone.

It is only through the persistence of Councillor Athena Zissimos in securing funds and engaging with OPDC to use them in a way which benefits both residents and businesses.

The Masons Green Lane subway mural was funded by the Old Oak and Park Royal Development Corporation (OPDC) and supported by Transport for London (TfL).

Councillor Athena Zissimos, Opposition Environment Spokesperson, said: “The subway and the immediate entrances are new and improved, and they look fantastic. The difference is welcome; what was once a dingy and dark thoroughfare is an optimistic and colourful welcome to Park Royal to be enjoyed by commuters and residents alike. It is fantastic to see OPDC using their available funds in such a good way. The artist Andrew Werdna brought together images of the local area and its industrial history, the culture, the wildlife and the people that make up this part of West London what it is.”
