Ealing's Official Opposition - May 2026

13 Lib Dem Councillors were elected to strengthen the opposition on May 7th as they announced their Shadow Cabinet!

The local elections in Ealing and across the UK were a wake-up call for Labour at national and local level to stop taking residents for granted and deal with issues impacting the lives of residents who are suffering the worst cost of living crisis since the 1950s!

Ealing Liberal Democrats have 13 elected councillors as the Official Opposition on Thursday 7th May 2026. They made gains against both Labour and Conservative incumbents in four different areas: Hanger Hill, Ealing Common, Ealing Broadway and Walpole, as well as retaining Southfield ward.

The Liberal Democrat Opposition Shadow Cabinet is:

  • Leader of the Opposition - Cllr Gary Malcolm
  • Planning, Licensing & Regeneration, Whip & Deputy Leader - Cllr Jon Ball
  • Finance - Cllr Jonathan Oxley
  • Honesty and Accountability - Cllr Mark Sanders
  • Children's Services - Cllr Adam Keenan
  • Adult Services - Cllr Andrew Steed
  • Environment & Crime - Cllr Athena Zissimos
  • Culture, Sport and Communities - Cllr Connie Hersch
  • Transport - Cllr Gary Busuttil

Councillor Gary Malcolm, Leader of Ealing Liberal Democrats said: “The people of Ealing have voted decisively for a strengthened Liberal Democrat opposition as they are fed up of paying an ever-increasing Council Tax bill in the worst standard of living crisis for over sixty years! Ealing Labour seems unable to get the basics right - wanting to close TEN Children's Centres and two Adult Day Centres for vulnerable residents and presiding over an unkempt, rubbish strewn environment with deteriorating high streets including many shops. We believe it is important to hold Ealing Council to account and encourage delivery through partnership working so that all residents can be proud of the borough we call home.”
